Welcome to Film and Fiction!
I am so excited to be teaching this new elective at Inspire!
This course is a 1 semester English department elective (the class can be taken for one or both semesters--the curriculum is different for each semester). We will be studying how to "read" a film, including an exploration of narrative structure and genre conventions. We will also examine specific techniques filmmakers use to craft their message (e.g. camera movement, visual and auditory imagery, shot composition, lighting, editing, and shot choice) and use short stories and non-fiction pieces to help compare and analyze the conventions of both print and film. One of the main objectives of the course is to begin critically thinking about how the Hollywood film industry reflects and shapes American culture.
